RESOLUTION CONCERNING TOBACCO, SMOKING AND CIGARETTES ON CAMPUS
WHEREAS: Cigarette smoking is a known health hazard to smokers, and a
serious risk to those exposed second hand.
WHERAS: Cigarette smoking adds substantially to health care costs and to
the cost of health care plans.
WHEREAS: Cigarettes represent a uniquely dangerous consumer product in that
they are dangerous in their intended use, and are the only major product
under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives currently sold by the University of Tennessee's Knoxville campus
stores and shops.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville, applauds research efforts into non-lethal uses of
tobacco and new land uses for farmers who grow tobacco.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville, encourages the administrators of the University to
install the appropriate signs and to move the appropriate ash trays to
create at least one non-smoking entrance to each campus building.
